Why does your Zodiac sign used to determine your Birthstone?
Have you every wondered how and why gemstones related to your zodiac signs or birth-months or vice-versa..... We'll its truly a unique and to be honest a confusing concept. I used to think myself it has been coined in such a manner so that Jewelry Stores have something additional to say when selling a gemstone and the same goes for an astrologer also.
The origin of birthstones is said to be associated with the breastplate of Aaron which contained twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel as proclaimed by Jeweish Historian Josephus in the First Century. The current list dates back to 1912 with only one addition since then – the tanzanite was added to December.

| Astrological Gemstones and Modern Birthstones are different concepts and both are valued in the modern world. I particularly believe that color is of utmost importance also. |
I have got the below mentioned info from wiki which is quite interesting:
The Breastplate of Aaron, referred to in Exodus 28:17-20:
10 Then they mounted four rows of precious stones on it. In the first row there was a ruby, a topaz and a beryl; 11 in the second row a turquoise, a sapphire and an emerald; 12 in the third row a Jacinth (To be honest I hadn't ever heard of this one - its a red variety of zircon), an agate and an amethyst; 13 in the fourth row a chrysolite, an onyx and a jasper. They were mounted in gold filigree settings.
14 There were twelve stones, one for each of the names of the sons of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the name of one of the twelve tribes.
The precise list of birthstones however can be found in Revelation 21:19-20 where the foundation stones of the new Jerusalem are listed, in the order of the Roman calendar:
14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. . .
19 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;
20 The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.
Our ancestors believed that winds, flooding, cyclones, storms, lightning and almost all violent aspects of Mother Nature were directly related to the anger and the rage of bad disturbed spirits. This led to formation on "mystical stones" which are also used in modern times. Some gemstones were considered to be used by sorcerers for magic and wizardry.... :)
